If you've ever glanced at a game and had to double-check whether you're playing Atomic or standard Chess, you're not alone — many of our variants share the same board and pieces, making it easy to lose track at a glance. We've added a subtle variant identifier to the board: a semi-transparent icon, drawn from the variant's own symbol, overlaid at the centre of the board. It's designed to be unobtrusive — just enough of a visual cue to remind you which variant you're in without getting in the way of play.
This applies to Chess variants (Atomic, Antichess, Three-Check, Five-Check, No-Castling) and Draughts variants (Antidraughts, Frisian, Frysk, Breakthrough, Brazilian, Russian, Pool, and English). Standard Chess and International Draughts are unaffected, as they're the default variants and need no reminder.
The identifier is on by default, but if you'd prefer a clean board you can turn it off at any time under Preferences → Game Display → Show variant board identifier.
