The origin of the Swahili Bao comes from the coastal regions which are Dar es Salaam, Lindi, Mtwara, Tanga, Morogoro and Zanzibar.
It has spread throughout Tanzania due to the Kiswahili language.
Tanzanian government through the founders of Nation the Late JK Nyerere and the founder of the Zanzibar nation the late Sheik AA Karume decided to give priority to this game due to its participation in the struggle for freedom.
In 1974 the Late JK Nyerere decided to start a national Bao game competition where various national champions could be found, the last competition he organized was in 1982 which was held in Mara region between Omari Saida from Dar es Salaam and Leonard Mang'onda from Rukwa village competed with Omari Saidi emerged champion.
In 1982, the Tanzanian government announced that the Swahili Bao game should have its own association to manage it, which was one of the Traditional Sports Association (TSA/CHAMIJATA) which was formed in 1975.
The leadership of the party fell apart in 1986 due to various reasons.
In 2001, Monday Mark Likwepa showed up and started managing the game of Bao by going through various team in the city of Dar es Salaam to play this game competitively.
In 2002 he organized the first commemorative concert of the death of the father of the Nation the Late JK Nyerere who was a lover and a skilled player of the Bao game and made various efforts to promote and develop it through various presidents who visited our country.
He canceled all the procedures that were used to play and invite each other to cook food as it is in our African culture, he started a league competition by giving various prizes to the winners.
He invited various international people including Nino Vesele from Italy who is the chairman of the Italian Bao Association called KLUBO INTERNACIA DE BAO AMANTOJ (KIBA).
He has compiled a book of Swahili Bao game rules that are used in Tanzania and the some countries in Africa.
The book is in Swahili language.
