Hello, I wrote about something similar before in team battle. playstrategy.org/forum/playstrategy-feedback/problem-with-arena-pairings
Me and @Winter were the only 2 players, after the game we couldn't get paired again. Happened again with @Bram_Bekkers and @Vladimir.

These team battles sometimes have such low numbers and are infested with bugs.
No arena pairing when only 2 players
Thanks for raising this issue. The team battle setup may have a different pairing system than a normal arena - we have not tested this as thoroughly as arena, but support the feature from Lichess out of the box.
It looks like the tournaments being held only have 1 member in each team, which means it would make more sense to just hold a standard arena tournament, where the pairings will work much better when there are only 2 players.
We have already raised a ticket to investigate the team battle pairings - however it is not the highest priority atm.
I thought about this issue. I don't think normal arena tournaments are viable because even if you are leader of a big team, people have to go out of their way to join your team.
Players don't often check for swiss tournaments.
Team battles have much greater visibility, you can add 50+ popular teams and there is high likelihood a player is part of atleast one team. And player only needs to join the arena and click team of choice. Team leaders can also easily notify their members with team messages for upcoming team battles in which they want more players to participate in.
They are good for strengthening communities and they are for a good reason popular on Lichess. Players who usually might not individually play a type of tournament, might be incentivized to be part of a team and like the team aspect. Just wanted to emphasize with this post my opinion why having bug-free team battles can be good to continue growing this site.
Thanks for the feedback it is in our bucket to fix before the end of the year.
