If Ludo has difficult puzzles and it's hard to find best move, I wouldn't call it simple either. Although I don't know enough about Ludo.
Tic-tac-toe, for example, I would call simple because you can always draw and easily find best move.
There is no magic in backgammon or other board games, other than Spell chess www.chess.com/terms/spell-chess , that's some strange harry potter variant. Each board game has its quirks and some people like them, some people don't. If people are having fun, to me that's all that matters.
Due to the randomness of backgammon, tournaments are adjusted so that you need to win multiple games to win a match. To win a grandmaster in a long series, is very difficult. If you observe and critique backgammon as a single game, then yeah in a competitive sense it's not that serious. But across multiple games it can be very skillful.
