3rd PlayStrategy Cup

As mentioned in the rules, each player will have the chance to block boxes, which will be permanently unavailable for use by either the player or their opponents throughout the tournament. The number of blocks for this tournament will be two per player.

Since a new game, Octagon Othello, has been launched on the site today, we will include it in the Othello Box. So the boxes are as follows:

1. GO: 19x19, 13x13, 9x9
2. Lines of Action: Lines of Action and Scrambled Eggs
3. Shogi: Shogi and Minishogi
4. Xiangqi: Xiangqi and Mini Xiangqi
5. Mancala: Oware, Togyzkumalak and Bestemshe
6. Othello: Othello, Grand Othello, AntiOthello and Octagon Othello
7. Amazons: Amazons
8. Chess 1 (Classic Chess): Standard Chess, Chess960, No-Castling
9. Chess 2 (Classic Chess Variants): Three-Check, Five-Check, KotH, Antichess
10. Chess 3 (Chess Variants): Crazyhouse, Horde, Racing Kings, Atomic, Monster
11. Draughts 1 (International variants): International, Antidraughts, BRKTHRU
12. Draughts 2: Brazilian, Russian, Pool
13. Draughts 3: Frisian, Frysk, American/English, Spanish
14. Backgammon: Backgammon, Nackgammon and Hyper
15. Breakthrough: Breakthrough and Mini Breakthrough
16. Abalone: Abalone

Every player has to choose two boxes to block and publish them here before scheduling the first round, which will be announced in the next post.

The wording is a little unclear to me, but is it the same as last year, where every round you select 2 boxes and your opponent selects two boxes. You then play 4 games, one from each box (you selecting from yours and opponents from their boxes - could be interesting to swap that??).
You then cant use the boxes you selected in future rounds? Hence 16 boxes and 8 actual rounds.

"Let’s suppose that statmatt choose Oware (BOX 5) and oruro chose Shogi (BOX 3). So, the match will consist in four games, two of Oware and two of Shogi."

I interpreted this to mean you choose the game directly and you just can't choose any other games from a box you've previously chosen.

@Jheps

It is indeed like last year, with the difference that from the beginning of the tournament you must block 2 boxes that you won’t be able to use, and your opponent won’t be able to choose against you either.

So, out of a total of 16 Boxes, you will have 14 Boxes available for 8 rounds.

The boxes I will block for this tournament are:

Box 1: Go
Box 6: Othello

This means that I cannot use these boxes during the whole tournament, and my opponents cannot choose them against me.

To further clarify if my opponent chooses a box do I get to choose the game within that box? Or does my opponent get to choose both the box and the game within the box?

@Checkmatealot

Thanks for the question. The player choosing the Box chooses the game too.

So, to answer your question, your opponent must tell you the Box along with one of the games in it, and you should do the same. You will then play four games — two from each Box.

I understand that the other way sounds interesting too, but for now, the idea is to let players choose which game they want to play.
